Want to turn a daytime shot into night in After Effects? In this tutorial, I’m doing a quick day to night conversion as part of the VFX series where I’m creating a burning building scene.

This is a fairly straightforward example because the original footage was filmed late in the day already, so there’s no harsh sunlight or complicated sky replacement to deal with. It’s mostly about darkening the shot, cooling the colours slightly, and preparing everything for the next stage where we’ll start adding fire, lighting, and smoke.

I always prefer showing techniques on more real-world footage rather than perfect examples, as it’s usually much more useful seeing how to work around problems you’d actually run into on a real project.

As always, the idea behind these tutorials is to keep things quick and practical so you can get the information you need and get on with your day.
